Originally released in the Spring of 2011 as part of the fifth wave of figures in the Pursuit of Cobra line, Steel Brigade was repacked, in the summer of 2011, as part of the first wave of figures in the G.I. Joe 30th Anniversary line. The 30th Anniversary line celebrates 30 years since the release of the modern, 3-3/4-inch G.I. Joe action figure. As part of the celebration, Hasbro not only included figures of classic characters from the 1982 A Real American Hero comic and television series, but also those from the G.I. Joe: Renegades animated series.
Heavy overstock of early waves of Pursuit of Cobra figures made it difficult to find figures from latter waves in the line. As Hasbro transitioned the Pursuit of Cobra line into the 30th Anniversary line, they took this into account and re-released several difficult to find figures, such as Steel Brigade, in the 30th Anniversary collection. Besides the updated 30th Anniversary card art, there are no variations to the Steel Brigade figure.

Did You Know? The name on the Steel Brigade character I.D. card is purposely left blank so it can be written in by... you! In 1987, Hasbro ran a mail-away promotion giving fans the opportunity to receive a personalized figure in order to "be the next Joe." Although everyone who sent in the $7.50 and two flag points received the same figure, Steel Brigade, the filecards were unique to each person containing their name and attributes they selected on the mail-away pamphlet.

Never really like this guy, even before. never really thought of joe's to be a bunch of faceless grunts. The joes are supposed to be the best in their field. I would rather army build Hawk than this. Any ways to each his own.
This figure gave kids hope that they could be a G.I. Joe someday so the nameless, faceless aspect that allowed you to pick your specialty and encouraged you to work hard to achieve a goal works well for the character. Steel Brigade also introduces an army-builder that a lot of fans seem to like so it won't sit on shelves like Arctic Destro. This is important when considering the current state of G.I. Joe collecting.
