Archive: Ripcord - Paratrooper (G.I. Joe: Renegades)

January 25, 2012

Ripcord was released in the winter of 2011 as part of the third wave of figures in the G.I. Joe 30th Anniversary line. The 30th Anniversary line celebrates 30 years since the release of the modern, 3-3/4-inch G.I. Joe action figure. As part of the celebration, Hasbro not only included figures of classic characters from the 1982 A Real American Hero comic and television series, but also those from the G.I. Joe: Renegades animated series.

Ripcord is another victim of the accessory changes and cuts that plagued the 30th Anniversary line. If you look closely at the figure's pre-production sample, revealed at G.I. JoeCon 2011, you'll notice an additional pistol and a unique vest, one that better resembles the vest worn by Ripcord in the G.I. Joe: Renegades animated series, which were not included with the figure. In fairness to Hasbro, the figure was revealed almost a year prior to its scheduled release date, however, the vest continued to be shown with the figure at both San Diego Comic-Con and New York Comic Con--two events closely leading up to the figure's retail release.

Release Date:

Did You Know? Rip Cord was first released in the A Real American Hero line in 1984 as fair-skinned, red-headed, HALO Jumper Wallace A. Weems. In 2009, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra saw Ripcord take on the likeness of actor Marlon Wayans, who played the character in the movie. Wayans' Ripcord was portrayed as an adrenaline junky with a comedic persona, but remained based on the Wallace A. Weems character.
