Archive: Duke - Squad Leader (Renegades)

October 10, 2011

Duke was released in the summer of 2011 as part of the second wave of figures in the G.I. Joe 30th Anniversary line. The 30th Anniversary line celebrates 30 years since the release of the modern, 3-3/4-inch G.I. Joe action figure. As part of the celebration, Hasbro not only included figures of classic characters from the 1982 A Real American Hero series, but also those from the G.I. Joe: Renegades animated series.

G.I. Joe: Renegades' initial reception was lukewarm, at best. Following the adult-targeted and well-received G.I. Joe: Resolute animated series was a tough task, but Renegades grew on people as the series progressed. Unfortunately, like G.I. Joe: Resolute, G.I. Joe: Renegades had a short series stint, leaving many fans frustrated. Despite being non-committal about the future of  the series, Hasbro still released a number of Renegades-based figures, including Duke, which hit retailers a few months after the series' final episode aired.

Release Date: 2011
Retail Price: $6.99
Accessories: tactical vest, knee pads, plasma pulse rifle, plasma pulse pistol without raised holster tab (3), plasma pulse pistol with raised holster tab (1), gas mask, display stand with G.I. Joe logo (DUKE)

Did You Know? A quick glance at Duke's Character I.D. card and you'll discover that Hasbro's gear round-up doesn't match the gear included with the figure. The concussion missile launcher, rappelling pack with grappling line, and Renegades-style plasma rifle, which were shown with the figure at G.I. JoeCon, were not on display at San Diego Comic-Con. It's likely that, sometime between G.I. JoeCon and San Diego Comic-Con and after the Character I.D. copy was finalized, Hasbro made the decision to omit the larger accessories, as a means of cost-savings.

Sorry, never did like the design of renegades. Too much like hip-hop should be a futuristic military. Also the gun designs is a bit too out-landish Hasbro would have been better off doing a cartoon of POC.

The design may not be what we long-time collectors are used to, but I think it's Hasbro's attempt at making G.I. Joe relevant to younger generations and for that, I can appreciate it. I think this Duke figure is better than the two POC versions, even though I'm not a fan of the weapons (that's an easy switch, though). The figure's articulation is really great--it has a wide range of motion--and I like the aesthetic.

He have a new uniform, new weapons and he continue be Duke.
